Physio Bike Fit

A bike fit is designed to optimise the cyclist’s position on the bike, so that they are able to ride comfortably and efficiently. Bike fits can also manage and prevent pain and injury by limiting unnecessary strain on the body during this highly repetitive activity.

Furthermore, there is no single optimum position that suits everyone. Every rider is different in their history, goals, anatomical features, strengths and weaknesses, hence bike fits should be highly individualised to the rider.

The bike fit is carried out by a Physiotherapist with extensive experience and expertise in cycling. It is suitable for all types of bikes - road, gravel, cyclocross, triathlon or time trail, MTB, hybrid and even e-Bikes.

NB. If you are looking to treat a current cycling-related injury, a Physiotherapy assessment, either in person or online, to establish a diagnosis and cause of the injury may the best way to manage it. Bike set up can contribute to pain or injury, but is often not the sole cause.

Who is a bike fit for?

Bike fits are for anyone who is looking to get the most out of their cycling, be that professional cyclists, amateur racers, triathletes, commuters, recreational riders, or beginners. Those who tend to see most benefit are those who:

  • Experience any discomfort on the bike or feel a disconnect with the bike.

  • Are recovering from an injury or returning to cycling after a long break.

  • Are looking for more speed or power.

  • Are relatively new to cycling, or are not familiar with how a bike should fit or feel.

  • Have recently purchased a new bike, or are looking to purchase a new bike.

Bike fit

What do I bring?

  • Your own bike which will be placed on an indoor trainer for the fit.

  • Cycling shoes.

  • The clothes you normally cycle in, including padded shorts.

  • Any spare components that you have that may be useful such as stems, saddles or cleats.

Fitting subsequent bikes

If you would like to be fitted on a bike different to your initial fit, this can be done in a shorter session (60min) as the full initial screening will not need to be repeated.

What does a bike fit involve?

You should allow up to 2 hours for the session. It includes:

  • An interview to gain an insight into your riding Cycling-specific physical screening looking at anatomical features, flexibility, strength, stability and movement patterns to identify imbalances, weaknesses and restrictions.

  • Measurement and observation of your current set up and position.

  • Making adjustments to your current set up and position, particularly the 3 contact points (saddle, feet, hands).

  • Correcting postures and movement patterns on the bike.

  • Pre and post bike fit videos to allow you to view how you sit and move on a bike, something cyclists rarely get the chance to do.

  • Re-measurement of the bike in the final position.

Recommend changes to components if required and suggestions on where to source.

  • Bike fit report with any further recommendations or exercises.

Bike Fit Review

A bike fit is not a finite process - your set up and position may change over time as your body, fitness, ability and goals change, and often periodic reviewing is required.

A follow up may be required because there are issues that were not able to be fully resolved in your initial fit. You many have sustained a new injury or are experiencing new pain or discomfort. Conversely, it could also be because you are looking to progress their position with increased fitness and conditioning.

Other reasons for a review may be that you have made changes to the components on your bike, changed shoes or cleats since a previous fitting, or the contact points have moved eg. after travelling, a bike service etc, and you are unable to replicate the measurements from your report.

Often people like to have a follow up for peace of mind, to ensure they are on the right track and getting the most out of their original fit.
